Welcome to my online professional portfolio!

I am a New York State-certified ESL teacher currently working at a K-5 elementary school in Brooklyn, New York as an ESL push-in teacher, servicing 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade English language learners. The work highlighted in this site, however, is mostly from my experience as a content-based, self-contained middle school humanities (English and social studies) teacher to mostly ESL students from the fall of 2008 to the spring of 2010. I encourage you to start by visiting the Site Map page to navigate through the contents of my portflio. For an in-depth look on my thoughts and ideals on several issues regarding classroom instructional practice, please visit my Teaching Philosophy page for more information. For up-to-date entries and new posts, please visit the Latest Entries page, which is the feature weblog of this professional portfolio.

This professional portfolio is a work-in-process. I am hard at work in completing this portfolio. I appreciate your patience.

About the Teacher

I was born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan, and have the ability to speak, read and write Mandarin Chinese fluently.  Having started my journey in America as an English learner in my junior year of high school, I fully understand the challenge most students face in using a foreign language, and I am eager to share my experience in learning, mastering, living and loving English with the students in New York City. I consider it my life’s passion to help and inspire students from around the world to succeed in this great country of opportunities.

I graduated from Teachers College, Columbia University in 2008 with a Master of Arts Degree in TESOL. Before coming to New York City for graduate studies in 2006, I have had a range of hands-on EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teaching experience in Japan, Taiwan, and China. After my graduation from Teachers College, I have enjoyed two years of teaching middle school English and Social Studies at PS184M Shuang Wen School, a Blue Ribbon Award-winning Chinese-English Dual Language School in Manhattan before starting my current position at PS105 in Brooklyn, NY.

As the sole 6th grade humanities teacher, I had the opportunity to create a content-based curriculum that successfully engaged students of different learning styles, and from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. As a push-in ESL teacher at my current school, I have gained the invaluable experience of working closely with classroom teachers of different grades to provide differentiated instruction in all subject areas to the English language learners.

Throughout my teaching career, I was often praised for my creativity and resourcefulness in meeting the unique needs of my students. I believe my strengths as an educator are best expressed in my eagerness to learn and grow professionally, my ability to work with different teachers, my sensitivity and compassion toward the students I serve, and the commitment to lead by example.

Thank you for your interest in the work I did with my students. Once again, please use the site map or table of contents page to help you navigate the contents on this blog. Your comments and feedback are welcome. You can also contact me via email at lihsintu at gmail dot com.
